Kernville, California – Residents of the Kern River Valley woke up to a gorgeous dusting of snow in the mountains surrounding this area today. Visitors to the area are scrambling to find snow gear such as gloves, jackets and boots so that they don’t miss out on the snow play.

The Kern River Valley offers visitors of all ages and abilities many snow-based outdoor adventure activities such as cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, sledding, tobogganing, snowmobiling as well as the more traditional downhill skiing and snowboarding. And, we are located just one short hour east of the greater Bakersfield area.

In one short hour, you can be on the trails surrounding Shirley Meadows Ski Resort, swishing and crunching your way through the snow covered forest on cross-country skis or snowshoes. The Greenhorn Mountain area, just below Shirley Meadows is ideal for beginner to intermediate cross-country skiers and snowshoers. This area also provides some great runs for thrill-seekers looking for the best toboggan runs; chances are you will need to build your own course though.

Another backcountry location for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing is the Sherman Pass area, located twenty minutes north of Kernville. Once you pass through the charming little town of Kernville, turn north on to Mountain 99 and drive approximately ten miles to Cherry Hill Road, turn east and drive until you hit snow. Then, simply bring out the gear and head for the beautiful snow-filled mountains. This area is also a prime location for snowmobiling; in fact, snowmobiles actually groom trails for cross-country skiing!

For more information about snow activities in the Kern River Valley contact either of the local chambers. Or, for information on the best sledding, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing locations, contact Mountain & River Adventures at (800) 861-6553 or visit us on the web at

Local: Stop by the MRA store to rent snowshoes/cross-country skis or to pick up any snow items you may have forgotten to bring like waterproof gloves, beanies, fleece-wear, and of course our awesome “Snowboogie” boards for sledding! Please remember to always yield to other trails users, be courteous and pack out what you pack in. See you on the trails!
