Acknowledging Earth Day and National River Cleanup Week

Kernville, California -- Mountain & River Adventures (MRA), a locally owned and operated raft outfitter in Kernville, CA invites you to participate in a free river clean up this Saturday, April 22, 2006, acknowledging Earth Day and supporting the National River Cleanup Week, later on in May.

“Educating people about the sources of litter and pollution in our rivers is the first step in cleaning up our waterways”, says David Brown, Chairman and Founder of National River Cleanup Week (NRCW). “In just a couple of hours a dozen volunteers can collect a mountain of litter from one mile of shoreline.” Since the inception of NRCW in 1992, 430,000 volunteers have participated in 4,180 cleanups covering over 88,000 miles of waterways.

“Making the time to maintain our pristine environment, while at the same time teaching the next generation about the importance of protecting our rivers and streams is a responsibility we as a community share,” states John Stallone, President of Mountain & River Adventures. “Part of my company’s vision is to help people connect with nature and learn to respect the outdoors. We teach by example on the river.”

Clean up participants meet at 9:30 a.m. at the parking lot on Lake Ming Road, northeast from Lake Ming, about 15 minutes east of Bakersfield. Participants will gather at the parking lot on Lake Ming Road, and then jockey vehicles to the take-out location in Hart Park. To clean up this five mile stretch of river should take about four hours. Participants are encouraged to wear layered clothing, hats, sunglasses and shoes that fit securely, sunscreen, and bring water and a snack. Personal floatation devices, paddles, rafts, and guides will be provided.

Community Clean Sweep will provide event trash bags, Kern County Parks and Recreation Department is assisting with trash receptacles, and the Girl Scouts - Joshua Tree Council and Owens Valley Career Development Center will be providing volunteers.

Community members are welcome to participate. For more information or to register, please contact Mountain & River Adventures at (800) 861-6553. Paddle for a purpose with MRA.
